The Problem
Nonexistent or inadequate education is crippling Haiti's progress.  Only 65% of children between the ages of five and twelve years old attend school.  Of the Haitian children who are fortunate enough to attend school, only 25% complete the sixth grade.  The quality of education offered in Haiti is grossly inadequate, leaving the people of Haiti unable to improve their own lives, improve their country or to compete in the global world.  Often the poorest children live in orphanages or homes where the directors or caregivers struggle to provide the most basic human needs, much less coordinate an educational program or provide transportation to school.

The Solution
The Foundation for Children in Need (FFCIN) created the Mobile Learning Center (MLC) to address this educational void, focusing on the poorest children in Haiti.  Our innovative approach is designed to bring education directly to children most in need: orphans and street kids.   For those children lucky enough to be in an educational program, the MLC will add enormous value to what they are already learning.  By going “mobile” and utilizing the latest computer technology, we are able to effectively reach more children at a lower cost than the traditional method of opening a school and we are able to provide students with individualized curriculums.

We currently load pickup trucks with laptops, hundreds of books and a projector and visit sites (primarily orphanages) throughout Port-au-Prince.  Our trucks navigate even the roughest, bumpiest roads to reach the most isolated students. While on site, children are able to check out books and use computers to participate in the world-renowned “Imagine Learning” literacy/ESL program.  On scheduled days, we coordinate educational films and presentations with the hopes of expanding the world for these sheltered children.  FFCIN volunteers and interns travel with the Mobile Learning Center to guide learning and assist with all programs.

Now What?

Our goals are as follows:
§To obtain a specially designed bus or customized “LearnMobile” vehicle to transport this self-contained learning center, which will
·increase the number of students we reach by cutting down the many hours spent loading and unloading the pickup trucks,
·increase the volume of educational materials we can transport to each location, and
·provide a safe environment for the equipment and the children,
§To add internet capability to give our student participants an opportunity to research and access their world,
§To introduce “culture specific e-learning” modules covering topics such as politics, history, language, social studies, etc., and
§To develop a scholarship program for those who distinguish themselves through their exceptional motivation and potential for success.

We invite you to partner with us in this exciting venture to bring innovative learning to Haiti.
Mobile Learning Center (MLC)
Our most exciting project so far! The MLC stated simply is a “school on wheels”. We are loading our specially equipped trucks with books, projectors, activities and computer stations allowing the children to begin exploring their world! We go to participating orphanages three times a week to enhance any traditional education that is already in place. And, with their very own library cards, the children begin a life of discovery.

Without an education, the future for an orphan in Haiti is bleak at best.  In many cases orphans have no exposure to the world outside the orphanage walls. We have come to realize that it is not enough to provide food and water. These things are important of course,
but we dared to dream bigger…
We asked “Can an orphan or street kid in Haiti grow up to be a happy, healthy, contributing member of society”? And we answered with a resounding
“YES”! By going “mobile" we ensure consistent, low-cost QUALITY education and give them hope for the future.
